What is the Awakened Method

The Awakened Method is an integrative philosophy and somatic practice for exploring the lived experience of being human.

From our earliest beginnings in the womb to the final seasons of life, we are continually shaped through experience. Our relationships, families, environments, cultures, and communities influence how we develop and how we come to experience ourselves and the world around us. The body participates in this entire journey—remembering, adapting, responding, protecting, expressing, and continually seeking relationship.

The Awakened Method does not look at one part of a person in isolation. Instead, it brings together different ways of understanding human development through three interconnected pillars:

Inner World

Most of us move through life with very little understanding of human development beyond the physical body. We learn about milestones, yet we're rarely invited to explore the deeper journey of becoming human the relationship between body, soul, spirit, emotions, consciousness, and the stories held within us. The Seven Spiritual Developmental Layers are not a linear process to complete, but a living labyrinth we walk throughout our lives. Each journey inward invites us to encounter the fundamental polarities of being human—Trust & Fear, Pleasure & Guilt, Potency & Shame, Love & Grief, Truth & Lies, Illusion & Vision, and Knowing & Following. As these opposites begin to reconcile within us, we naturally move toward greater wholeness, integrating the heart and remembering our place in relationship with ourselves, one another, and the living world.  Through somatic integration, we explore how these experiences live within the body, nervous system, relationships, movement, and patterns that continue to shape how we meet ourselves and the world.

For millennia, we have lived within systems of polarization—good or bad, right or wrong, masculine versus feminine, light versus shadow. In this separation, many of the qualities we call shadow have been feared, rejected, or demonized, leaving essential parts of our humanity hidden in the dark. Yet fear, guilt, shame, grief, lies, and illusion also carry stories. When we become curious about both sides of our human experience rather than trying to eliminate one side, we can begin to understand what each has been protecting, expressing, or asking us to see. The work is not to choose the Light over the Shadow, but to bring both into relationship so the wholeness of who we are can be witnessed and accepted.

As we explore the Seven Spiritual Developmental Layers, our stories and repeating patterns begin to make greater sense. We can ask: What has my body learned? What part of my story is asking to be heard? What has remained in the shadows because there was never space for it to belong? Whether we are exploring a relationship pattern, preparing to welcome a child, integrating a birth experience, or seeking to understand a child's sensory or emotional struggles, the journey is one of bringing what has been separated back into relationship. When both the Light and the Shadow are given a voice, integration becomes possible, and we can begin moving from polarization toward greater wholeness and coherence.

Enviornment

We do not develop in isolation. From our earliest experience in the womb, we are continually shaped by the environments that hold us: the emotional landscape of our family, our relationships, our homes, our communities, and the culture in which we live. Our nervous system is always in conversation with what surrounds us, adapting to where there is safety, connection, unpredictability, disconnection, or a lack of support. When we are struggling with a repeating pattern, a relationship, pregnancy and postpartum, or a child who is having sensory or emotional challenges, we cannot look only at the individual. We also have to become curious about the environment around them.

Within the Awakened Method, we explore relationships and family dynamics, home and daily rhythms, sensory environments, community and belonging, and the support systems available to us. We begin to notice the environments we inherited, the ones we have unconsciously recreated, and the ones we now have the opportunity to reshape. Sometimes what appears to be an individual struggle is also a response to something happening within the larger system. Rather than asking only, “What is wrong?” we begin asking, “What is this pattern asking me to understand about the environment in which it is occurring?”

The work of Environment is not about creating a perfect home, family, or community. It is about becoming conscious of the conditions that support the human being in becoming more fully themselves. Through somatic awareness, we notice how the body responds within different relationships and spaces—where we contract, where we settle, where we feel overwhelmed, and where we experience belonging. From there, we can begin creating environments with greater intention, bringing the Inner World and outer world into relationship so that change is not something we are trying to accomplish alone, but something our relationships, rhythms, homes, and communities can begin to support.

Inquiry of Knowledge

We are constantly making meaning from our experiences. From childhood onward, we develop beliefs about ourselves, other people, relationships, the body, the world, and what we believe to be true. Some of these understandings come from our direct experience, while others are inherited through family, education, culture, religion, science, and the systems that surround us. Within the Awakened Method, the Inquiry of Knowledge invites us to become curious about what we know, how we came to know it, and whether the beliefs and perspectives we carry still support the person we are becoming.

Through curiosity and reflection, we begin to explore our experiences from more than one perspective. Instead of immediately labeling something as good or bad, right or wrong, success or failure, we create space to ask deeper questions: What has this experience taught me? What have I been taught to believe about it? Is there another way of understanding what happened? What becomes possible when I allow myself to see differently? Inquiry allows us to move beyond rigid answers and into a living relationship with knowledge one that continues to evolve as we evolve.

Within the Awakened Method, inquiry is also a somatic practice. We notice what happens in the body when a belief is questioned, when a familiar story is challenged, or when a new possibility begins to emerge. By bringing together the Inner World, the Environment, and Inquiry of Knowledge, we can begin to see the larger story of our lives with greater clarity. We are not simply gathering more information; we are developing the capacity to listen, question, discern, and integrate. Inquiry becomes the place where what we have lived can be understood differently and where new possibilities for how we live can begin to emerge.

The Experience of an Awakened Method Session?

My intention is to offer a space where you feel deeply seen, supported, and free to explore your own experience. A space where your body, your story, and your relationships can all be listened to with compassion, where what has been hidden can gently come into awareness, and where you can remember the wisdom that has always been within you. From that place of awareness, new possibilities naturally begin to emerge.

No two sessions are the same because no two people carry the same story. We begin wherever you are, without expectations or the need to have everything figured out. Whether you arrive feeling curious, overwhelmed, uncertain, or simply sensing that something within you is asking for attention, you are welcome exactly as you are.

At the heart of the Awakened Method is an understanding that human development is a lifelong process, an art form to practice.  The Seven Spiritual Developmental Layers offer a way of understanding the unfolding of our human experience. Rather than viewing our struggles as problems to overcome, we begin to ask what they may be revealing about our development, our relationships, and our journey toward greater wholeness.

As we explore your experience together, I hold these developmental layers gently in awareness. Sometimes a present-day challenge is connected to an earlier experience that has not yet been fully integrated. At other times, life may be inviting you into a new phase of growth that is asking to be lived more consciously. Instead of asking, "How do I fix this?" we begin asking, "What is this experience inviting me to understand?"

My role is not to tell you what your experience means or who you need to become. I am here to hold a compassionate space, to reflect what is emerging, and to support your understanding of Spiritual Human Development. Together, we become curious about the hidden stories, protective patterns, and developmental experiences that continue to shape your life. As they gently come into awareness, new understanding and new possibilities begin to unfold.

What Might a Session Include?

A session may include reflective dialogue, two-chair exploration, somatic movement, guided inquiry, Light & Shadow exploration, developmental and birth story exploration, nervous system awareness, relationship dynamics, symbolic exploration, or gentle biodynamic cranial work. Rather than simply talking about an experience, we become curious about how it is being lived and expressed through your body, your emotions, your inner landscape, and your relationships.

Above all, my intention is to offer a space where you feel deeply seen, genuinely listened to, and compassionately supported. A space where every part of your experience is welcome, where hidden stories can gently come into awareness, and where new possibilities can unfold at a pace that honors your own becoming.
